Fall is a fantastic time to visit the Malone area. It is the high point of certain attractions and the focus of some great events. Within a half-hour drive there are many easy ways to get out into the country, the forest, and the mountains. Here are some highlights to put on your fall must-do list.

Attractions

Golf fans love those crisp fall days on the fairways. The Malone Golf Club has been called the "best pure classic nine" in the world, and the bright fall foliage just adds to the allure. Those sunny days also make the terrace, with its lovely view, a great place for a festive lunch or dinner during a fun day on the links.

Another fall tradition is The Great Adirondack Corn Maze. Tucker Farms plants a whole section of corn just for creating the maze, which changes every year. From early August until the last weekend in October, enter the maze and try to find the mailboxes which contain the puzzle pieces. Or, not. There's no pressure here.

Visit the Almanzo Wilder Homestead and get an idea of what life was like for a rural farm family in 1870. Tour the homestead museum, house, and barns, as well as a traditional 1800s one-room schoolhouse. Their Civil War Living History Encampment & Annual Harvest Festival in the fall has19th century entertainment and demonstrations, craft and produce vendors, and meticulous re-enactors. Also, the famous doughnuts, just like Amanzo's mother used to make.

Events

Thrill to the high tech of yesteryear at the Adirondack Rural Skills and Homesteading Festival. The Adirondack Visitor Interpretive Center has its own team of horses which have been trained in farming skills. There are also demonstrations of logging, canning, cider making, woodworking, and renewable energy, along with lumberjack sports from the Paul Smith's College Woodsmen's Team.

National Alpaca Farm Days at Merry Den Alpacas takes place each fall. Let your little ones get up close to feel the alpacas, tour the farm, view demonstrations, and more!

Every Wednesday afternoon the Malone Farmers Market takes its space at the airport and fills it with fresh produce, homemade jams and baked goods, and homemade sausage and other specialty meats. The fall is particularly festive with mums, decorative corn stalks, and crafts.

The Titus Mountain Oktoberfest is a family-friendly festival at the mountain, with special games and hayrides, vendor tents, and lots of harvest-time food. This is also the first year for the Titus Tough Jeep Rally, a 4x4 event for the whole family.

Nature

The Malone area has some of the best biking routes in the region. The flatter land north of the Adirondack Mountains is broken up with picturesque brooks, streams, and rivers for easy, low-traffic rides with wonderful scenery.

Chasm Falls Loop is a favorite. This loop goes by the lake and waterfall complex known as Chasm Falls, a wonderful background to photograph the fall color.

Take a drive out to Township 7 Brewing Company for a craft brew. Enjoy their porch and patio beer garden.

Township 7 is a local favorite.

To explore 25 miles of trail that enter every ecosystem in the Adirondacks except alpine tundra, head south from Malone to visit the Paul Smith's College VIC

Take the Boreal Life Trail boardwalk through a wetland and an arboreal forest, or take the Barnum Brook loop across wooden bridges that go over tumbling water and small rapids. The paths here are easy to follow, and many are wide, smooth, and gently graded. With almost every kind of tree in the North Country growing somewhere on the property, this is a destination to let us see the full range of nature's colors.

Harvest time in the North Country is full of celebration. Our Foliage Reports are a great way to monitor the progress of the foliage turning, and plan that trip.
