Rhapsody in Color Exhibit and Children’s Workshop Rhapsody in Color Exhibit and Children’s Workshop
Guest artist and quilter Donna Hastings will be the artist of the month at the Foothills ARTSociety Gallery from Sept. 2 through Sept. 29. The opening reception is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 2 from 2 - 4 pm at the 213 West Main St., Malone, NY location. On display will be a variety of colorful landscape and circular based quilts. The exhibit will include pieces that have won awards at the Vermont Quilt Festival, Quilts Unlimited at View in Old Forge, Hoffman Quilt Challenge, Sew Batik and locally at the Adirondack Quilt Guild. Pieces which received the Edna and Wally Hill Awards from the Franklin County Fair will also be on display.
A quilter since 1971 Donna is recognized for her use of color and precision piecing in her traditional and art quilts. This exhibit will feature circular designs and landscapes. The works are paper pieced and thread painted using a bright color palette. Many of the fabrics used are batiks or hand painted and dyed fabrics by the artist. The thread used includes textured and metallic threads.
“Every quilt has a story,” Donna relates. Quilts reflect a history of relationships and events whether they are used every day as pieces of art or kept as heirlooms. Every quilt on display will have a history of its origins and travels.
As a respected teacher in various techniques Donna encourages fellow quilters and artists to expand their horizons. She teaches locally at numerous guilds in the Northeast and participates in various workshops featuring nationally recognized quilt artists and teachers.
A graduate of SUNY Plattsburgh and Potsdam College in Family and Consumer Science and Education Donna resides in North Bangor with husband Ralph and dog Chips. She is also a master garment maker and horseback rider.
In conjunction with the gallery exhibit, a children’s workshop “Painting with Thread” has been planned for Sat., Sept. 22 from 10-12 at the Foothills Gallery. Donna will be sharing her talents with children 10 and older who have some experience with a sewing machine - no other sewing skills are necessary. The class is limited to 8 so pre-registration is required. There is no charge for the workshop but there will be a small material fee. Call 483-0211 if interested.
This workshop will use thread as a pen. Starting with a drawn still life on fabric students will enhance the picture with thread. A drawn still life can be created with fabric dye pens, picture fabric or fabric ink pens. Stitching with the sewing machine will be through three layers - picture fabric, batting and backing.
