St. Regis River – Santa Clara Flow

The St. Regis River not only offers phenomenal paddling, but also excellent birding and one of the best places to explore for birds is Santa Clara Flow which stretches south of the tiny hamlet of Santa Clara along Route 458. The current is slow and easy and birders should hug the shoreline and its alders and conifers for the best chances to find breeding and migrating warblers, vireos, flycatchers, and other songbirds. The marshes further up the river also contain Wood Duck, Great Blue Heron, and American Bittern while Bald Eagle, Osprey, and Merlin hunt along the shoreline. Birders can also stop in at Dexter Bog while they are in the neighborhood.
