Almanzo Wilder Farm

On February 13, 1857, Almanzo James Wilder was born in Burke, New York. Almanzo had a happy childhood growing up on the family farm.

Later, he met and married Laura Ingalls and they eventually settled in Mansfield, Missouri, where the Little House books were written, including Farmer Boy, which describes a year in Almanzo's life on the Burke homestead.

Come visit and get an idea of what life was like for a rural farm family in 1870. Tour the homestead museum, house, and barns, as well as a traditional 1800s one-room schoolhouse.

History is alive and well at the Franklin County Historical and Museum Society. They were first chartered in 1903, so some of their acquisitions have been "hands on" as history happened all around them.

Their home is now in a Civil War-era mansion, downtown. In 2008 the carriage house behind the main building was renovated into a research and archival area, popular with researchers and genealogists. For history fans, it's a treasure trove of interesting things
